On the Magis website you will find two new videos, one focusing on Chair_One, the other on Naoto Fukasawa.

In the first one, Konstantin Grcic talks about the creation of Chair_One, an absolutely unique chair, with a shape that is the fruit of a long period of study and preparation, sketches, card models and prototypes, before finally being produced in die-cast aluminium. Plenty of space is dedicated to the production of the seat, guiding us through the different phases, and thus bearing further witness to the complexity of this product.

The second video, meanwhile, is an interview with Naoto Fukasawa, who talks about his work as a designer for Magis, and focuses particularly on Substance chair, his latest new product for the company, as well as on the creation of Déjà-vu, a simple, minimalist, yet highly iconic stool.

The fish float, suspended, swimming through the air, like in a child’s imagination.

In my artistic language, fish are  in fact one of the animals most closely tied to the dream world and in dream interpretation, they are associated with the symbolism of water and the depth of the unconscious mind”.

Celebrating the 40th anniversary since the foundation of Magis, the mule – symbol of the company for years – is now also a product.

So we have Ettore (design Konstantin Grcic), an ornamental object named – not by chance – after Hector, Homer’s hero, protagonist of many deeds in Greek mythology.

As Eugenio Perazza, founder of Magis, likes to say: “There is a precise and perfect connection between the essence, the courage and the spirit of Magis and the essence, the courage and the spirit of the mule. This is why, for years, the mule has been the emblem of our company.

Like Magis, the mule is humble, it is not conceited, doesn’t show off, is a tireless worker, never gives up and when it falls it picks itself up, because it doesn’t look for the easy way out, but rather loves a challenge. And it’s innately, intensely curious and therefore continuously explores new paths”.

Magis 1976 – 2016

+ read

Events

1976-2016:

This year Magis reaches a major milestone: forty years since it was first founded.

Forty years of dreams that take shape every day, a story told by many voices and many hands, always upheld by a boundless energy and animated by the search for that “more than” that is a fundamental characteristic of the company, as is implicit in its very name.

The story of Magis is above all one of people sharing passion, dedication and daily challenges over the past forty years: from the founder Eugenio Perazza to his family, to the many collaborators who work within the company or in the network of external production units with which it interacts, showing once again its open, innovative approach.

An operation that combines creativity, technology and organization, in the best tradition of Italian production, giving shape to an increasingly extraordinary, appealing and engaging world, every single day.

As the firm’s founder Eugenio Perazza likes to assert: “There is a precise and perfect correspondence between Magis’ essence, courage and spirit, and those of a mule, which is why this animal has for years been the emblem of our company.

Like Magis, the mule is humble and not conceited, it doesn’t show off, it is a tireless worker, never gives up, and when it falls it gets right back up again. It doesn’t look for the easy way out, indeed, it loves a challenge, and possesses an innate, intense curiosity that leads it to continuously explore new paths”.

Today, on the occasion of the company’s 40th anniversary, the mule also becomes a product in the Magis catalogue, with a name that is not chosen at random: Ettore – Hector – like Homer’s hero, central to so many exploits in Greek mythology.

Architect and journalist Patrizia Scarzella is a long-standing friend of Magis, and this was her way of marking the company’s big birthday, looking back over its history, and highlighting “its youthful spirit, its playful outlook, its capacity to surprise us, to dream, and to look beyond the present”:

“Magis is turning forty. They say that life begins at forty. Forty is the age of maturity, growth, new horizons, thoughts and objectives, but also of new responsibilities.

Magis is actually ageless, an exceptional case that is ‘forever young’, born and raised with an aptitude to stay youthful, thanks to its positive outlook, flexible vision, drive and innovative spirit.

It would seem that Magis knows the secret of the ancient legend of eternal youth!

It has not changed over time, maintaining the playful approach of its earliest days, a whimsical mindset that seems, if anything, to have grown stronger over the years.

From its first steps to the present day, it now walks with confidence and runs fast. With experience it has grown more sophisticated, more cultivated, increasingly attentive to and in tune with the signals, able to stay one step ahead of the rest, more attractive, radiant and joyful.

Desired, indulged and loved by many. It is a joy to know it, to spend time around it, to work with it.

It gives energy and vitality with its positive, forward-looking mentality.

It has a versatile mind, that of a young team raised under the guidance of Eugenio Perazza, the founder and soul of Magis, who has ably spread its spirit and philosophy across the globe.

“The exemplary story of MAGIS has always been an upward curve,” so wrote Alessandro Mendini recently. “An admirable series of products. An accurate choice of designers. Fully updated strategies. Sophisticated communication. The right industrial policy. And then the new MAGIS headquarters. The location is ZEN, a magic box to protect this rare phenomenon.”

Within the panorama of international design, Magis really is the ‘rare phenomenon’ described by Mendini.

The lateral thinking with which it approaches objects, imagines them, interprets and creates them, is unique and special. And it always manages to surprise us with its fabulous intuitions, its ability to dream, to go beyond the present, designing a future where it is nice to live.

Happy birthday, dear Magis!”

Three different venues (the Parliament of Brittany, Les Champs Libres and the Fonds regional d’art contemporain Bretagne) will host a retrospective dedicated to the works of the Bouroullec brothers, running from 23 March until 28 August 2016, allowing visitors to discover the creations of these designers, organized into three distinct areas, from objects, to micro-architecture projects, to works for public spaces.

Included will be a selection of all the main pieces created by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec for Magis during what is now a fifteen-year-long working relationship with the company.

Our Substance chair and armchair (design Naoto Fukasawa) are now available at stock. The natural or painted ash plywood legs, crossed in a “U” shape, are topped with a plain shell made of polypropylene or polypropylene covered in fabric or leather. Deceptively simple, these details give the chair and armchair a discreet yet elegant appearance and a very friendly look, suitable for domestic and contract use.

The Officina chair and stool (design Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec) are currently in production.

Officina tables are therefore enhanced with new items featuring the unusual combination of wrought iron and plastic or leather.

Here, too, absolute simplicity meets the allure of an ancestral raw material: the living metal with its slight imperfections that make every piece in the collection unique. Officina is unmistakably industrial in spirit, but with a refined and tasteful soul.

Magis has become a partner of Be Original Americas, an association that supports original design and the companies that promote it. Through a program of lectures, workshops and roundtables, the goal of the Be Original campaign is to advocate the economic, ethical and environmental value of original design.

This will encourage consumers, the architecture/design community, producers, dealers and media partners to support creativity and authenticity as an investment in the future of design and an incentive for innovation.

Magis: sustainability born from certified quality

Senza categoria

For Magis, quality is not an abstract term but a tangible value that concerns all aspects of the company and its products. It also speaks of genuine responsibility to people and the environment.

Magis is certified to ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001:2004, and its products have passed all resistance, safety and durability tests envisaged by European and U.S. standards. For some products, Magis has obtained other international quality certifications such as TÜV SÜD, FSC and GreenGuard Gold.

Beyond the paperwork, however, sustainability for Magis means developing objects ripe with authentic values and far from the mundane logic of consumerism, to make the world more beautiful, inviting and exciting.

So while our products are built to last physically, they also have a timeless functional appeal in response to concrete everyday needs, and a beauty not bound to passing fads but entrenched in a culture of research and design.
