Big Will now on the market!

    + read

Big Will table marks a new chapter in a gripping story, in which the Magis philosophy and technology, with its friendly shapes and rigorous production, meets the creative spirit of Philippe Starck, design star of indisputable fame. Big Will’s most striking and characterful features are its wheels and the die-cast aluminium structure, which comes either in a polished finish or painted white or black. The top is in etched tempered glass (matt or glossy), in a choice of four different sizes. The extending version of Big Will is particularly significant: a grand, elegant table, the result of many years of study and research to achieve that “more than” that Magis always strives for when developing its designs.

In this version, the table measures 200 x 100 cm when closed, but with two 50-cm extension leaves, it can reach an overall length of three metres. The table can be extended effortlessly, without needing to lift it, simply by gliding the extending end on the floor thanks to the two wheels, and to a patented sliding and locking mechanism developed especially for Big Will.

Officina design Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec

    + read

    Products

The fifteen-year collaboration between Magis and the Bouroullec brothers has led to the creation of some extraordinary products, which have over the years become bestsellers.

The latest fruit of this partnership is Officina, a collection of forged iron tables, launched at the Salone del Mobile 2014 and available on the market since some time ago.

Iron forging, the process used to shape this metal, pressing it between the hammer and anvil, has a story that stretches back over millennia, and throughout history, this technique has been used to create an infinite number of everyday objects

The Officina collection explores the possibility of establishing a new creative language through this ancient fabrication process: a system of forged iron legs was created, with an original geometry suitable to support tops of different dimensions and materials: steel, wood, marble, glass, etc.

The absolute simplicity of the minimalist design combines with the allure of a raw material handed down through the centuries, alive, with those slight imperfections that make each piece in this collection unique, with an unmistakably industrial feel, but combined with a profoundly refined and elegant spirit.

On the Magis website there is a video illustrating the production of Officina’s forged iron structures, presenting the various stages in this fascinating and complex process, which encompasses all the mastery of artisanal processing applied to industrial production.

The footage is interspersed with contributions from Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec and from Eugenio Perazza, describing how this project first came into being, arising from a clearly-defined idea at Magis, which became the objective. As Eugenio Perazza himself explains, “the aim was to reinvent a newer, more modern and contemporary language for forged iron, developing the design with an industrial approach, while maintaining the element of authentically artisanal manufacturing so that this would ultimately become the dominant feature of the design, prevailing over the industrial aspect and defining the overall expressive quality and aesthetic of the piece.”

From 10 May to 31 October 2015, Magis is sponsoring the second edition of D’Annunzio e i Giardini di Panat the Vittoriale degli Italiani in Gardone Riviera (Brescia), an international event where the theme this year is “Inezie squisitissime. Nutrire la mente e il corpo tra Oriente e Occidente” [Exquisite trifles. Feeding the mind and the body between East and West]. During the period of Expo 2015, the great poet’s residence celebrates the link between d’Annunzio and the Orient with a widespread circuit of exhibitions, signature installations, special events, meetings with prominent guests, and the proposal of tastes and flavours close to D’Annunzio’s own heart. Ambassador for the 2015 edition of “I Giardini di Pan” is Alessandro Mendini, creator of the Magis Proust, of which a special version has been produced for the occasion by Magis in a unique bold lilac colour that D’Annunzio himself identified and named “violato”.

Magis Proust “violato” will be included in the exhibition, alongside other versions of the famous armchair, and will also provide the seating for the guests of the Incontri Scomodi [awkward meetings] to be held throughout the six months of the event, including Mendini himself, as well as Vittorio Sgarbi, Morgan and many other personalities. The Magis Proust in its usual range of colours will also be featured in various other locations around the Vittoriale, particularly in the Limonaie, in a specially-built glasshouse that will be the venue for a reinterpretation of D’Annunzio’s cuisine.

From 9 May to 22 November 2015, Magis will be present in the Venice Pavilion for the 56th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, taking part in “Guardando avanti. L’evoluzione dell’arte del fare. 9 storie del Veneto: Digitale – non solo digitale” [Looking ahead. The evolution of the art of making and doing. 9 stories from Veneto: Digital – not only digital] curated by architect Aldo Cibic. The Venice Pavilion has in the past focused on the applied arts, and here it resumes that thread, albeit in a different, more contemporary direction: exploring the most recent applications of high technology. Thus, the exhibition will combine artistic creativity with new technologies, presenting 9 paradigmatic stories: stories of creative processes that lovingly bring together craftsmanship and technology, with a particular eye to the processes that underlie products, and that lead to the creation and development of ideas.

The case histories presented by Magis are Chair_One (design Konstantin Grcic), Steelwood Chair and Officina (design Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec), all products acknowledged for their intrinsic quality and originality, and for the high level of technological innovation attained, often at the end of an arduous journey, laden with much experimentation as well as numerous risks.
